The Lo Ditor Pond

At an altitude of approximately 1900 meters, immersed within a forest of Larches, you can discover a small corner of the Chavacour Valley, located within the municipality of Torgnon: the charming Pond of Lo Ditor, a special wetland crossed by the Petit Monde torrent and animated by streams and springs which give life to this habitat of particular naturalistic worth.
In the marshy area, you will find a rich mosaic of species and habitats, typical of wet environments which, though widely present in the Valle d’Aosta, are rarely gathered all together in so few hectares of land. The Groenlandia densa of the Alps is largely present in the site, as are the not-so-common Carex limosa, the Ranunculus aquatilis, the Salix petandra and the Utricularia minor.

Activites

  • Hiking

All itineraries are described in the TRAILS section.

  • Mountain biking

The site can be reached on mountain bikes along the dirt-road which leaves from Chantorné. An interesting opportunity for bikers is to combine the visit of Lo Ditor with that of the Pond of Loson, through the Bornel Pass.

  • Horseback riding

To reach the site, the trail marked for mountain biking can also be used by horseback riders.

  • Snowshoe trekking

Two itineraries take the trekker to Gilliarey and to Fenêtre d’Ersaz respectively. Before your departure, it is recommended to check the regional weather and snow forecasts, as the area is subject to avalanches.

    Cross-country skiing

The area can be enjoyed by cross-country skiers: poles are visible on which you will find the sports’ classic symbols, indicating the trails which can be taken in winter.

How to get there

By car

To reach the site, from the highway exit of Châtillon-Saint-Vincent, take the S.R. 46 regional road towards Valtournenche until the village of Antey-Saint-André; then turn left for Torgnon. Once you have reached the village, continue towards the upper villages in direction of Septumian and then go beyond the picnic area of Plan Prorion.
