Botanical Garden Paradisia

PARADISIA, in Valnontey, in Cogne, at an altitude of 1.700 m, at the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park. A place of study and research, it has yielded space to the cultivation of an increasing number of alpine plants, originating from Italian mountains as well as from principal mountainous chains around the world. A journey through diversified environments, a site which offers beauty and serenity.
It is the white Lily of the Mountains, the Paradisea liliastrum to give its name to this botanical garden; by its inception, the botanical and aesthetic value of this garden has never ceased to grow: firstly, due to the support of the mountain biology station which has, for the research on the flora and fauna of the Park; secondly, due to the cultivation of Alpine plants, the spontaneous flora Herbarium and the spermbank. Important international seed exchange has been set up, involving botanical gardens of the world and the publication of the Index seminum. With its surface area of almost 15000 sq.m., presents the visitor with two possible itineraries, one within the garden premises in which Alpine rock gardens have been re-created, and a panoramic one, set more to the exterior, offering many interesting naturalistic opportunities. Every species is labeled with its scientific and popular names and its botanical family; exotic species are also labeled with their world distribution channels. At the extreme end of the garden, the visitor can admire vast spaces in which the meadow pastures dominate. A small petrographic exhibit, the butterfly garden and a collection of lichens do of Paradisia a natural heritage of incredible worth and beauty, not only for the Valle d’Aosta, but also for its guests from around the world.

  • Hiking

    All trails within the site are exclusively walking trails. It is strictly forbidden to wander outside the marked paths and it is recommended to hold children by the hand. Dogs are not permitted.

Discover the site

The Paradisia Botanical Garden is open from mid-June to mid-September, but the best time to admire its surprising blossoming is end of June-beginning of July. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from June to September, and from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in July and August. An entrance fee is required. In order to fully appreciate the beauty of the cultivated species and to contribute to their conservation, it is recommended to visit the garden in small groups, preferably guided by our expert personnel. Guided tours, set at fixed hours, are included in the price of the entrance ticket.

How to get there

By car

Cogne can be reached by taking the S.R. 47 regional road from the S.S. 26 state road at the height of Aymavilles. Continue until the hamlet of Valnontey, located at 3 km from the chief-town.

By bus

The Aosta – Cogne busline is available with 7 daily trips, and reaches the centre of the municipality of Cogne. From here, take the paying shuttle bus to Valnontey, whose number of daily trips increases during periods of high touristic affluence.

Accessibility codification of sites

VIVA has chosen to supply everyone – youngsters, adults, the elderly and the disabled – with all the sites’ information so as to allow the visitor to choose a destination in an autonomous way.
An “Accessibility Codification”has thus been defined.
